How can you treat Dehydration at home?
When more fluids and water leaves the body as compared to the amount entering the body you go through dehydration. Dehydration on a lower level can lead to constipation, headaches or lethargy. Most of the time dehydration can be reversed when you increase the intake of fluids. You need to be aware that this dehydration occurs due to diarrhea, excessive sweating or vomiting. The elderly or those living on high altitudes or even athletes are more prone to dehydration.
Symptoms of dehydration:
It is advisable to tackle dehydration with home treatments at the very onset, instead of waiting till this gets severe. You know you are dehydrated when you are lethargic, have a dry mouth, dizziness, weak muscles and headaches.
A little more severe dehydration leads to a drop in blood pressure, an increased heart rate delirium, sunken eyes, fever and even unconsciousness.
Home remedies for Dehydration:
Treating dehydration when you experience the initial symptoms can save you from the trip to your doctor.
- Drinking Buttermilk:
Buttermilk is rich in different minerals like magnesium and potassium and is a natural probiotic. This is a safe treatment for treating any sort of dehydration.
All you need to do is mix ½ teaspoon of dry ginger in half a cup of buttermilk. This needs to be had at least 4 times during the course of the day to combat dehydration.
- Intake of Coconut water:
Levels of potassium and sodium are depleted when you are dehydrated. Coconut water is rich in these minerals and thus works appropriate to treat dehydration naturally. You can have this water throughout the day to ensure you are spared from additional complications due to dehydration.
- ORS which is Homemade:
As known, ORS is Oral Rehydration Solution and is that perfect remedy to treat dehydration. You can make this at home by adding 6 teaspoons of sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt to 4 cups of water. Ensure that the salt and sugar are completely dissolved in the water. Continue drinking this solution till you feel better.
This is termed as the ‘perfect’ treatment for dehydration as the content of glucose of the sugar used in this mixture increases the uptake of sodium and water that you lose when you are dehydrated.
- Drinking Apple Juice:
Apples are not only rich in magnesium but also have some amount of potassium. These minerals need to be restored when you are dehydrated. Thus consuming apple juice to treat dehydration, works well. Diluted juice of apple works better as compared to the electrolyte drinks used for treating dehydration. You need to blend one apple with half a glass of water and drink this at least twice a day.
It is advisable to tackle dehydration in the initial stages so that there are no further complications. It is also important to ensure that the underlying conditions which are leading to this dehydration are treated.
Prevention is always better than cure. Ensure you consume enough of fluids in the hot summer months.
