What is Nose Bleeding?

Home Remedies for Nose BleedingA nosebleed is loss of blood from the tissue lining the nose. Bleeding most commonly occurs in one nostril only. Nosebleeds are very common. Most nosebleeds occur because of minor irritations or colds. They can be frightening for some patients, but are rarely life threatening. The nose contains many small blood vessels that bleed easily. Air moving through the nose can dry and irritate the membranes lining the inside of the nose, forming crusts. These crusts bleed when irritated by rubbing, picking, or blowing the nose.

Nose Bleeding Causes:

  1. The most common causes are dryness and nose picking. These 2 things work together - nose picking occurs more often when mucus in the nose is dry and crusty.
  2. Other, less common, causes include injuries, colds, allergies or cocaine use. Children may stick small objects up the nose. Older people may have atherosclerosis (which is the hardening of the arteries), infections, high blood pressure and blood clotting disorders, or they may be taking drugs that interfere with blood clotting, such as aspirin. Sometimes, the cause of nosebleeds can't be determined.

Nose Bleeding Symptoms:

  1. Bleeding usually occurs from only one nostril. If the bleeding is heavy enough, the blood can fill up the nostril on the affected side. Signs of excessive blood loss include dizziness, light-headedness, confusion, and fainting. Excessive blood loss from nosebleeds does not often occur.

Nose Bleeding Prevention Tips:

  1. Include plenty of protein and iron in your diet
  2. Use saltwater (saline) nose drops or a spray.
  3. Avoid forceful nose-blowing.
  4. Do not pick your nose or put your finger in your nose to remove crusts.
  5. Avoid lifting or straining after a nosebleed.
  6. Elevate your head on one or two pillows while sleeping.
  7. Apply a light coating of a moisturizing ointment, such as Vaseline, to the inside of your nose.
  8. Limit your use of aspirin, warfarin (such as Coumadin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), clopidogrel (Plavix), or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  9. Keep your blood pressure under control if you have a history of high blood pressure. This will help decrease the risk of nosebleeds.
  10. Avoid smoke. Smoking slows healing.
  11. Do not use illegal drugs, such as cocaine or amphetamines.

Nose Bleeding Home Remedies:

  1. Ice: Putting a piece of Ice on the head or putting a wet cloth on the head is a good remedy to stop nose bleeding or Epistaxis.
  2. Lemon: Putting a drop of Lemon juice in both the nostrils, helps to stop nose bleeding immediately.
  3. Ghee: Lie down putting your head backside with some pillows and then put 2-3 drops of pure Ghee in the nostrils and try to inhale slowly which helps to stop nose bleeding
  4. Onion: Putting Onion Juice drops in the nostrils, helps to stop nose bleeding
