What is Gas / Flatulence ?

Home Remedies for gas flatulenceFlatulence is the expulsion through the rectum of a mixture of gases that are byproducts of the digestion process of mammals and other animals. The medical term for the mixture of gases is flatus, informally known as a fart, or simply (in American English) gas. The gases are expelled from the rectum in a process colloquially referred to as "passing gas", "breaking wind" or "farting". Flatus is brought to the rectum by the same peristaltic process which causes feces to descend from the large intestine.

Gas / Flatulence Causes:

  1. Presence of excessive amounts of bacteria in the intestines
  2. Consumption of large amounts of fibrous foods
  3. Digestive disorders such as gastroenteritis
  4. Irritable bowel syndrome
  5. Constipation
  6. Food or water that may be prepared under unhygienic conditions
  7. A high-fat diet generates a huge amount of carbon dioxide, some of which is released as flatulence or gas
  8. Odorous flatulence is caused due to the metabolic breakdown of sulfur-containing proteins and amino acids in the intestines
  9. Spicy meal
  10. Drinking alcohol or smoking
  11. Lying down too soon after eating
  12. Obesity
  13. Pregnancy
  14. Anemia

Gas / Flatulence Symptoms:

  1. A feeling of bloating and discomfort
  2. Excessive expulsion of wind
  3. Belching
  4. Pain in the abdomen
  5. Indigetion
  6. Nausea

Gas / Flatulence Preventions :

  1. Eliminate certain foods and beverages such as fatty, spicy foods, milk, coffee, tomatoes, oranges, peppermint, chocolate and alcohol that may trigger stomach reflux symptoms
  2. Eat slowly and always sit up straight when eating
  3. Avoid going to bed on a full stomach – have a meal 2 hours before lying down
  4. Eat smaller meals throughout the day and avoid overeating. Chewing the food slowly and steadily is important.
  5. Wear loose fitting clothes to release pressure on your stomach
  6. Stop smoking as it weakens the lower esophageal sphincter
  7. Regular exercise such as walks keeps the intestinal muscles in ship shape. Regular bowel movements keep the levels of gas producing bacteria low resulting in less flatulence.
  8. Yoga is believed to be extremely helpful in relieving a variety of digestive problems, flatulence included. There are in fact various poses that are meant specifically to address the problem of excessive gas, abdominal discomfort and bloating and flatulence. Yoga poses in fact include a posture known as the ‘wind relieving pose’.

Gas / Flatulence Home Remedies:

  1. Ginger and Heeng: Mix 1/2 tsp of dry ginger powder with a pinch of asafoetida (Heeng) and a pinch of rock salt in a cup of warm water. Drink this concoction to get relief from gas.
  2. Ginger: Chew on some fresh ginger slices that are soaked in lime juice after meals.
  3. Peppermint (Pudina): Chewing peppermint after a meal does a lot more than just freshening your breath. Peppermint contains menthol that soothes the digestive muscles. It helps in treating flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain that accompanies gas. Peppermint oil combined with caraway oil has been used since ages to treat abdominal discomfort caused by flatulence.
  4. Carom seeds (Ajwain): Eating Carom (ajwain) seeds and black salt with hot water gives immediate relief from gas or flatulence.
  5. Jaggery (Gudd): Eating a piece of Jaggery after every meal helps to get relief form gas or flatulence.
  6. Guava(Amrud): Taken with Salt everyday morning helps to overcome gas or flatulence problem.
  7. Yoga posture: Sitting for a 5 min in the 'kneeling posture' or Vajrasan after every meal gives instant and permanent relief from gas or flatulence.
